Is this the moment that has been predicted and long awaited? When Vice President Dick Cheney falls on his sword toprotect the president and to elevate— let’s see, Rudi Baby?— some rising Republican to take his place as Veep and be in line to run for president from the high ground (well, that’s more than debatable at this point, isn’t it?)? It’s another perfectly engineered setup and it smells like the babyface genius Rove: A strategy put in place way back when for use... whenever. And whenever has come. Scooter says Bush authorized him to leak Plame’s name via Cheney. The beauty of this scheme is that some time ago Bush did authorize Cheney to declassify information— by executive order. Which is quite a general thing, and not at all like (at least in legal speak) saying, “Let’s go ahead and give Plame to the press, Dick.” So now Bush can say he isn’t actually responsible for the leak, because he merely authorized his deputy to declassify at will. Once again, it looks like Bush will out-teflon all previous presidents.
