the vote of no confidence in the conduct of the war in Iraq is not, repeat NOT, a vote of no confidence in the people serving in the military in Iraq, but there are those still loyal to the current administration’s policy in Iraq who will frame the no confidence vote as a vote against our men and women in the military.
what spurious logic! is it a vote of no confidence in someone’s car if we take their keys away from them when they’re drunk? and that’s pretty much what’s going on here: good car, someone at the wheel who shouldn’t be there. the vote of no confidence is a vote of no confidence in the failed strategy in Iraq, not in the people charged with carrying it out, a strategy that is as careless of the lives of the people in our military, as it is willfully ignorant of the facts on the ground. and it is a vote of no confidence in the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, a failed businessman whose every victory was handed to him or bought for him, a frat boy who was once obsessed with playing Risk, and who now, to our great peril, is playing that obsession out in the real world, causing unfathomable damage, both material and political. we will be reaping the consequences of this man’s decisions for decades to come. |
